but your giant risk has to ACTUALLY PAN OUT otherwise you’re just an asshole.
Yeah, like that Sophie Scholl. Utter failure, and nobody noticed. Complete asshole.
Yes this is JUST like that. You’re kind of proving my point. If you take a big risk and actually reveal evil, you are doing something noble. I’m not with the other people who’ve been commenting today saying Manning is wrong because he broke an oath. Duh he broke it — that’s what whistle-blowing is. Here’s the thing though. When your act of defiance is revealing classified information, you’re taking a gamble not just with yourself, but to some extent you’re putting other people’s asses on the line. Which, again, is FINE, but only if you reveal something worthy of revealing. If you take a risk with the safety of soldiers in the field to protect the Republic’s values, you’re still fine in my book PROVIDED IT WAS WORTH IT.
How many soldiers can you objectively show have actually been exposed to greater risks by the leaks? What discreet military operations have been compromised as a result?
This shit? Clearly not worth it. Pretty useless. We knew most of this and what we didn’t isn’t terribly shocking.
Folks experiencing the Arab Spring might tend to disagree. You also can’t even say this; as I type this, wikileaks.org indicates that 19,382 of 251,287 cables have been released so far. You could see that for yourself just checking the site.
Why are they only releasing them in small batches? Oh yeah, they’re performing a journalistic gatekeeper function by examining them beforehand to make sure no soldiers/assets/operations are compromised or harmed.
Notice how Manning is a way bigger story than anything he revealed?
That can also indicate that mainstream corporate media sucks; and oh MAN do they hate these new media kids being in their yard. Most of the older journalists I know can’t stand the idea that their journalism degree no longer keeps them in some sort of special club. But then they forget freedom of the press is held by the people, not media organizations.
Nazi Germany is totally different, but congratulations for Godwinning this discussion; I was worried we’d make it to the end of the day without open comparisons between the Obama administration and Hitler. +10 Internet points to you. Redeemable for nothing.
Like I said, it’s not necessarily the results, it’s the act of doing what you know to be right. And you can hardly weigh in on the results of this one yet - the leak isn’t even completed. You also might want to do a little more research still - these cables run from 1966-2010 - covering far more than the Obama administration.

*I totally just unliked this so I could like it again. Shhhhh*
