Half of me still thinks at times, ‘Hey—we should convince Stewart to run for office.’ And then I remember he’d turn the offer down. BECAUSE HE’S A COMEDIAN.
The weirdest thing about all of this—to Stewart, as well—is how often he’s taken as a serious authority on politics and current affairs. He literally fell into the Daily Show as a replacement host, intending to BE a replacement host, and he clicked, both with the topic and the staff at the time. And he’s done wonderful, amazing things. I mean that with no hint of sarcasm whatsoever—former presidents, current elected members of Congress, international dignitaries—at least one bona-fide king, as I recall—come on his show. Beg to be on his show.
The thing that still gets me the most? How the political right seems to see him as this puppet figurehead for the most loose and immoral segment of the political left. Have they never watched his show? He skewers ALL sides, if it’s funny. He’ll do just about anything if it gets laughs. And why? BECAUSE HE’S A COMEDIAN.
